Zander breaks his wrist

Zander 13 years old

Zander’s team had 3 games downstate this weekend- we were supposed to leave Friday night for an early game ok Saturday morning at Cranbrook, 3.5 hours away. I had my work Christmas party for NMC & didn’t get home until after 6:30pm. By that time all the roads had turned to ice and there were accidents happening all over the place. The route downstate had accidents all through it and would have taken us a really, really long time, not to mention I was scared driving my Ram truck in ice since it doesn’t handle great. Zander and I made the decision to miss his first game on Saturday and travel down when the roads cleared. I’m so glad we did because traveling was great. We even had time to stop at Birch Run before going to the rink.

Saturdays game started was being played at Big Boy Arena in Fraser. North Stars we’re playing Metro Jets, they were big all the players were. Zander was playing so good, had a couple great chances, some great on passes, he was hustling and then, a bad hit, well wasn’t completely bad, the kid just got Zander with his elbow but he somehow got Zanders hand, which bent backwards and Zander knew right away something was wrong. He went down, we all watched him wither in pain and not able to get up. Mr. Conway came out to help
Zander and he was in obvious pain. I made my way over to the bench, thinking I was going to find him saying hello be fine, but what I found was Zander in extreme pain and crying. I ran and got ice and then found him by himself in the locker room where he told me he knows it’s broken. I got his skates off and off we went to the nearest ER. Well, that ER was absolutely crazy, so many people on a Saturday night. We were staying at Grandma Cousino’s house so we went to the ER on West Rd. It was so nice and quiet and they were able to see us quickly. X-rays taken and determined what Zander knew, his wrist/arm was fractured.

As we were sitting there waiting, another hockey player came in with the same exact injury as Zander except it was her right hand and Zander’s was his left.

They were able to splint him up and off we went to Grandma Cousino’s house.

While we were on our way to the ER, I texted our friend. Dr. Mike Peters, who is an orthopedic surgeon, he’s already prepared to put Zander’s cast on on Monday. Hoping in a few weeks Zander will be in a short cast and can play hockey with the cast on, but we will have to see.

This is the first broken bone for the boys while they were playing a sport and hopefully it’ll be the last.

The cast got put on and we were surprised that Zander needed a full arm cast. 3 weeks in a long cast and 3 weeks in a shorter cast. Hope it goes by fast!!
