Farm Hand

Last night we took our first bike ride of the season down to see the cows at the beginning of our subdivision. Even though we pass the cows atleast 2 times daily, we can never get enough of them and think it is so cool living so close to a farm! So we were almost there and a lady in a van stopped to tell us it looks like one of the cows is trying to have a baby but is having a difficult time. So we make our way up to the cow and yep there is definitely something happening to her, her stomach was totally moving all by itself, and she could not get comfortable.

Jason went across the street to tell the nice neighbor who was outside doing yard work about the cow and asked her if she knew how to get ahold of the farmer. She called the farmer and within 10 minutes he pulled up. Mr. Jack Crackey, very nice old guy, began telling us that she had just delivered a still birth that morning and the vet was out to help her making sure she was alright and even checked her for more calves but said there were no more. Jack was a little surprised as were we when she stood up and something was hanging out of her back-end. (sorry it was a little graphic and kind of disgusting). I am so glad I am not a cow, and they can give me drugs when I deliver.

Jack hurriedly parked his car, told Jason he was a big guy and asked for his help delivering the calf, so off Jason went to be the farm hand. Once they got over to her, sure enough she was trying to push another calf out, however, the calves legs weren't straight forward but one was bent, so she couldn't get it out by herself. Jack and Jason had to really pull, OUCH for the cow, to get the calf out. The second calf was not alive either. This poor cow had twins and neither one made it. But once the calf was out of her, she got up instantly and started walking around and looked better.

In the meantime, it was getting dark outside, and cold, and my feet were killing me since I was still on my rollerblades watching all of this, so Hunter and I decided to head on home. We got home about 9:15pm and Jason didn't roll in until almost 10:00pm. Jack was full of stories about the area, even told him that back in the 40's and 50's the land our subdivision was on there was a dance hall where the Coast Guard and the girls went to hang out and dance.

So not only did Jason help deliver a calf but he also made a friend, Farmer Jack! I think this is the closest that we will ever come to actually being farm hands.
